“Frontiers in Photonics” series of biweekly seminars
. These seminars serve as a way to disseminate recent research results from various groups in Southern California to scientific communities in physical sciences, biomedical engineering, and biology at UCI. The speakers will be professors from Southern California, scientists from industry as well as local students and postdoctoral researchers.

Youth Science Education Outreach. The program will include visits to local high schools in Orange County, and events at UCI, where students will participate in science fairs. The program will also expand to include UC Irvine undergraduates to promote the knowledge of optics and related fields through monthly discussion meetings.

Poster Session and “Student of the Year Award”. This is again one time event, where graduate and undergraduate students will present their research. There will be a committee to evaluate their work and past academic performance. The meeting will culminate with announcing a few students as “Student of the Year” by OSA Chapter.

Harry Potter Carnival: a Magical Muggle Morning July 14, 2007: Desiré along with Donn Silbermann of the OISC participated in this Girl Scouts event in celebration of Harry Potter.  Optricks wizard Donn and apprentice Desiré were there to teach at the Hogwarts School of Optics.  The girls made their own spinning tops to demonstrate that white light is made up of all colors, and we had optics games involving periscopes and telescopes.

Roosevelt Elementary School
June 13, 2007: Desiré and Max participated in the MESA and Hands-On-Optics science day at Roosevelt Elementary School in Compton, California along with the OSSC's Donn Silbermann.  200 students grades 2-5 competed in such events as macaroni cars, egg drop, and bottle rockets.  We then showed them how to make their very own kaleidoscopes.

Santa Ana High School
June 7, 2007: 45 students from Santa Ana High School cam to UCI and listened to a talk given by Desiré about light and optics.  After the talk, the students designed and built their own bone out of everyday materials, and had a competition to see whose was the strongest.   They then went on to a lab tour where they learned about the regeneration of the Mexican Salamander.

Costa Mesa Jr. High School May 18, 2007: The honors biology class from Costa Mesa Middle School came to UCI and listened to a talk given by Desiré about Light and Optics.  After the talk, they had a blast with a set of Optics workbenches provided to us by OSSC's Donn Silbermann.  The kids learned a lot, and had fun with the Fresnel lenses and polarizers.

Undergraduate Seminar, May 10th, 2007: We hosted an outreach event to attract undergraduate students into our chapter. It was the first in a quarterly series of undergraduate seminars. This first installment was given by chemistry professor Eric Potma, who gave a talk titled "The Secret of the Photon." We had a large undergraduate turnout, and hope that the next one will be even better.

Art in Science Contest, May 4th, 2007: A contest open to all UCI students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty in all disciplines to present their work in an elegant form of art. We had a large turnout of about 22 applicants and approximately 30 works of art. The winners were: 1st place-- Jeremey Roth, 2nd Place-- Paul Nylander, and 3rd place-- Mason Dean.

Beall Center Family Day April 21, 2007: This is a UCI event, at the Beall center, the on-campus Art Gallery. Families from all over orange county  come anjoy the exhibits.  On April 21st, Max and Desiré participated along with Brian Monacelli from the OSSC to show families how interesting and fun optics can be.  We had a huge turnout, and a lot of fun demonstrating how the eyball works.

Optricks Days, March 10,11, 2007:  sponsored by OSSC
Our members went and volunteered to teach optics and the science of light to children young and old. This year, the event took place at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, Ca.  Darren, Hrant and Desiré taught the kids about the nature of light, as well as how our eyeballs work with our brain. They showed the kids about light aliasing, reflection, refraction, diffraction, and how different optics work. They also  taught the kids how to make whight light out of different colored light.  The children, parents, and our members all had a blast.

Outreach Costa Mesa High school, Feb 15, 2007
On February 15, 2007, the UC Irvine student chapter of OSA, went to Costa Mesa High School in Orange County for outreach to junior and senior high school students. During this event, students had a chance to play with the state of the art USB Spectrometer to understand the concept of color and wavelength. A few simple experiments were used to demonstrate fundamental properties of light such as total internal reflection, mixing of colors, light transmission through optical fiber, etc. The enthusiasm and the excitement of children was overwhelming.

UCI/OSA/OSSC Optics Extravaganza, Nov. 8, 2006: sponsored by OSSC
On Wednesday night November 8, 2006, the UC Irvine student chapter of OSA, along with the OSSC (Optical Society of Southern California) hosted an Optics Extravaganza. The night began with a little dinner (compliments of OSSC), and a great presentation by Postdoctoral researcher Galina Kerenskaya, who showed us the first ever real-time video taken of the formation of Bromine-hydrates.  We then had a wonderful poetry reading by John Gardiner, who shared with us his thoughts on life and the stars.  The poetry was followed by an overview of optics given by Dr. Wytze van der Veer, and the night ended with tours of some of UCI’s most prominent ultrafast laser labs led by UCI students. The night ended with the OSA student chapter president Darren Segale announcing the new student chapter leaders:  Hrant Seferyan – President, Desiré Whitmore – Vice-President, and Vahan Senekerimyan – Secretary and Treasurer.

Newport/Spectra Physics Product Show, Sep. 26, 2006: sponsored by Newport Inc.
On September 26, 2006, the UC Irvine student chapter of OSA, hosted Newport Corporation. The show started with a brief introduction by Newport Engineers about their recent optomechanical devices and applications. Some of the newest state of the art equipment used in optical Labs was at display. The attendees enjoyed pizza and refreshments. The event was accompanied with contests, and followed prizes for testing skills in optical alignment. There was a separate OSA table in the meeting were people could sign up and join OSA. We had a huge turnout (thanks to the pizza), and overall, the meeting was a success.

COSMOS, summer 2006
In summer 2006, many of our members participated in the COSMOS program. COSMOS is a California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science, where high school students from all over California live in UCI dorms, take college-level math and science classes, and take part in many labs. Last summer many young students joined us for an exciting month of hands on research in state of the art optical labs at UC Irvine. They had an opportunity first time in their life to live a life of a researcher for a week. Students took part in various experimental projects, which included building a Michelson interferometer, two-photon fluorescence of biological molecules, calibrating a homemade spectrometer, etc. The students learned a lot, and many of them have come back during the school year to carry out experiments of their own design in our labs.

In 2005 our efforts were honored with an Excellence Award 2005 at Frontiers in Optics / Leadership Conference 2005 in Tucson, Arizona.
